Make your own Advent calendar


Whether you're making it for your own child, parents, grandparents or godmother, an Advent calendar is a gift that is sure to bring a smile to their faces – for 24 days in a row! But it doesn’t have to be an “off the shelf” calendar. If you want something to stand out from the crowd, you would be well-advised to make our do-it-yourself Advent calendar tree. It’s a real eye-catcher and is quick to make thanks to our step-by-step instructions!

You will need:

  • 4 thin strips of wood (approx. 1.5 cm wide, 0.5 cm thick, 60 cm long) 
  • A wooden strip to use as the trunk (approx. 2.5 cm wide, 1.5 cm thick, 40 cm long) 
  • A plank of wood for the foot (approx. 20 x 20 cm, 3 cm thick) 
  • A strip as a support for the trunk (approx. 1 x 1 cm) 
  • Wood saw, mitre box 
  • White paint, paintbrush 
  • Battery-powered screwdriver, screws 
  • Glue gun, folding rule 
  • Hand tacker (e.g. NOVUS J-17)
  • Nails, length 16 mm
  • Fine wire staples A in 12 mm length
  • Jute cloth cut into strips, Christmas decorations as required

Step 1: How big should your tree be? Start by deciding on the length of wood for the trunk and branches (the branches get smaller as they go upwards; if the lower branches are 20 cm long, the top ones could be 8 cm long, for example). The tree should be big enough to allow room for 24 gifts. Saw the required wood strips to the right size! It is best to sand down the ends a little so that they don’t splinter.

Step 2: Now you will need the tacker and fine wire staples. Use these to fix the branches at regular intervals to the trunk.


Tip: It is worth laying the branches along the trunk first so that you can check how the overall result will look!

 

Step 3: Place the trunk into the wooden base and attach it from underneath using a wood screw. Drill the hole for this first. Now you can paint the tree as you wish!



Step 4: Shape little gift bags from the strips of jute cloth. Cut the cloth into approx. 12 cm long strips, fold them in half and glue them together on the left and right-hand sides. Alternatively, you could also use a stapler for this. Turn the little bags inside out so that you can’t see the seams. Then thread a piece of string through a small hole in the cloth or tack them directly to the branches.

 

Step 6: Now all your tree needs is a few Christmas accessories. And the gifts! Use parcel string to attach the little bags to the Advent calendar tree.
