Find the right security level
Choosing the right security level is an important aspect of buying a document shredder. After all, the destruction of data is subject to legal regulations. ISO/IEC 21964 (formerly DIN 66399) defines seven security levels for destroying data using document shredders. The rule of thumb is: the higher the number following the P, the smaller the shredded particles and the less likely it is that the information can be recovered.
The appropriate security level is determined by the content of the data you want to destroy: the more sensitive the content, the higher the recommended security level.

Document shredder with P-2 security level
The DAHLE Deskside 204P helps you take control of the chaos: it destroys up to 29 sheets at a time with its particularly high sheet capacity. Equipped with P-2 security level, the paper is shredded into strips. Document shredders with P-2 security level are suitable for shredding documents with internal data that needs to be made unreadable. This includes packing lists in logistics, general instructions, blank forms, etc.

DAHLE Deskside 404P
Document shredder with P-4 security level
The DAHLE Deskside 404P is the perfect document shredder for the office to help you keep on top of the chaos: it destroys up to 21 sheets at a time with its particularly high sheet capacity. Equipped with P-4 security level, the document shredder destroys personal data securely and reliably. Document shredder with P-5 security level
Confidential data is an integral part of work in doctor’s practices, law offices, tax firms or even HR. These documents are particularly sensitive and must be destroyed to P-5 security level. This security level shreds documents into the smallest particles no larger than 30 mm², making it highly unlikely that the destroyed data can be reproduced with current technology.

What are the security levels and which level do I need?
When it comes to shredding documents, there are various levels of security for different protection classes. Which security level you need depends on what kind of data is being shredded and how – which particle size for what kind of information. These levels range from P-1 to P-7, outlining what kind of information is involved and how it is being shredded.
What is the benefit of particle cut?
With particle cut, information on corresponding data carriers is cut both vertically and horizontally. This is made possible using the high-quality cutting rollers that feed the datasheet into the shredder and shred it in a corresponding particle size, depending on the model. A large number of DAHLE document shredders offer particle cut. As a basic rule of thumb: the smaller the paper is shredded, the higher the security level and the more confidential the data being shredded remains.
What media can document shredders shred?
It all depends on the model. Some of our models can even shred data carriers such as CDs or disks. The various shredder possibilities in relation to different data carriers can be identified using the PFOTE principle.
